The Listening Conundrum:
How to Choose?
Choosing
a listening program is confusing. What
really matters when it comes to auditory
stimulation? What factors are most
important to consider?
To our knowledge,
most of the auditory programs available have
merit and can point to beneficial results.
No surprise - music in itself is healing.
Nevertheless, there are enormous differences in
terms of efficacy, quality and value.
Here are 8 commonsensical points
to keep in mind:
- Sound
+ Movement + Visual > Sound
Alone: We used sound therapy as a
sole intervention for years before integrating
visual tracking, movement and balance
activities. There is no doubt that a
combined approach delivers better results with a
broader spectrum of
clients.
Why? Our
senses are interconnected; a combined therapy
trains you to process multiple sources of input
simultaneously. Of course, a program
in which the auditory component is carefully
integrated with specific movement and visual
exercises is preferable. (We know of one
we can recommend. )
- Delivery
of Sound: Delivering sound via both air
and bone conduction results in a significantly
more effective therapy. The main reason
for this is the vestibular stimulation generated
by bone conducted sound.
- Equipment
Quality: Hardware related to bone
conduction (BC) - the special headphones and
amplifier – is expensive. This is where
it’s most important to shop before you buy (even
better, before you pay for training). Ask
the provider to see a demo system, ask users
about their experience. Is the equipment
robust enough to last? Is the amplifier
rechargeable or are batteries required? Does the
provider have a good reputation for supporting
their equipment?
- Customizing
Programs: All sound programs can be
customized, but to what degree? The more
music you have to work with, the greater the
customization options (i.e. less
repetition). Additionally, programs which
are tailored to different therapeutic goals will
help you be more prescriptive in your
approach.
- Expressive
Language: Output and input are
integrally related. As in a feedback loop,
one facilitates the other. Finding an
auditory program which is well integrated with
an expressive program can make a significant
difference in terms of
results.
- Playback
Device: CDs provide good quality sound;
however, they tend to skip and get
scratched. MP3 players with lossless
format, such as the Apple iPod, offer CD quality
sound and don’t skip.
- Music
Quality: All music used in
auditory programs is pre-recorded. Clear,
full sound is important but perhaps more
important is the presence of a broad range of
frequencies and the way in which they are
processed. Again, talking with
therapists who have used the product is helpful:
are the results consistent? Are client reactions
to the music positive?
- Value:
Before you commit to training, look closely at
the equipment and compare providers.
What is included for the price? Remember:
you’re paying a lot of $$ and you need quality
that will last.
SALES
MYTHS TO BE AWARE OF:
- “We
have HD (high definition) sound quality.”
Even if music is recorded in HD, you can’t get
HD quality using a playback device that does not
have HD capability. iPods do not have HD
capability.
- “iPods
have lesser sound quality than CDs.” This
statement is true of most MP3 players; however,
iPods have ‘lossless format,’ which is equal to
CD quality.

WHAT'S
NEW
Locking Connector
Technology
iLs
Systems now come with a locking connector,
making for a much stronger connection between
the headphone cables and the amplifier. This
improvement is available now, and will be
automatically implemented on newly purchased
systems.

Renowned ADHD expert Dr.
Hallowell on iLs
"iLs has expanded
upon an auditory therapy developed in Europe
years ago, and added visual and balance
exercises. The program can be customized to
address different purposes, e.g. reading,
auditory processing, attention, autism, etc.
Furthermore, iLs has designed it so that kids
actually have fun doing this program, instead of
looking at it as drudgery. Fun leads to
compliance, and compliance leads to
success.
We see consistently
excellent results with iLs with regard to
attention and learning problems. iLs works
at a neurological level so it’s a great
complement to the behavioral, cognitive and
medical approaches we use at Hallowell
Centers…." |
