FEATURED
Interview: Doreen Hunt,
M.A., OTR/L
 Doreen
Hunt, M.A., OTR/L Children’s Therapy
of Woodinville, Woodinville,
WA
What kind of clients do you
see? Most of my clients are children
with sensory processing disorders, autism and/or
learning difficulties in the age range of
3-12.
What interventions do you
use in conjunction with OT? iLs,
Handwriting Without Tears, Social
Thinking
What assessments do you
use? SIPT (Sensory Integration and
Praxis Test); VMI (visual motor integration);
TVPS (Test of Visual Perceptual Skills); DTVP
(Developmental Test of Visual Perception);
Peabody II (Motor Test); Bruninks Oseretsky II
(Motor Test); Sensory Profile; Sensory
Processing Measure; SI clinical
observations
How do you think iLs
enhances your OT practice? I’ve
practiced for 26 years and only just began using
iLs about 2 years ago. The changes I see with
iLs are in the areas of improved attention,
self-regulation, visual tracking, core strength
and bi-lateral motor coordination. As a result
of these improvements, I regularly see language
improvement and noticeably happier kids,
especially those that had anxiety and separation
issues. I should also mention improvements
in the so-called “vegetative functions” such as
sleep patterns and bowel
functions.
How do you combine iLs
with OT - in terms of program structure and
frequency - and can you give me an
example? I have quite a few I could
talk about but one low functioning autistic girl
comes to mind. I began working with her
when she was about 4 years old. She came
to me with severe developmental delays, and was
diagnosed later with autism. I worked with
her for years about once a week and then added
iLs to our sessions when she was 8. We
used the Sensory Motor program on the iLs Focus
system. Fairly quickly we saw nice changes
in visual tracking and her anxiety
level. In February of this year, at
age 9, her parents were so happy with the
improvement in self-regulation and behavior that
they bought a Focus unit to use at
home.
They are diligent about doing iLs 3
times a week, still listening to the Sensory
Motor protocol (for the 3rd time) and now the
changes are more significant. This girl
can express her thoughts in complete sentences,
eye contact is much improved, she’s very nicely
regulated and calm, and her newly developed core
strength is readily engaged. She is more
tolerant to change, is beginning to read, and
her handwriting is much improved.
From the parents’ perspective, one
of the most significant changes is that for
first time in her life she isn’t having night
terrors. Every single night of this
girl’s life either the mom or dad has gotten up
with her to calm her nighttime anxiety.
Now she’s sleeping thru the night for first
time. The only variable they’ve had in
their therapy in the past 6 years has been the
addition of iLs, so we’re fairly sure that the
frequent application of the iLs program has
played a significant role in her
improvement. It’s wonderful to see
the change not just for her but for her entire
family! |
